This majestic great blue heron has been sited by many locals on the Boise River, including Betsie's husband, who took the photo Betsie referenced for the painting. She was drawn to the juxtaposition of the stoicism of the pose and the ripple suggesting connection, the view below the surface and the reflection above, and the red leaves opposite the green reeds. Life is never as simple as what we see on the surface.
