That's Betsie on a horse in the Arenal River in Costa Rica. Not your typical self-portrait. She reached deep into herself, overcoming fears on many levels, to engage in a workshop called, “Journey into the Soul: Horses & The Medicine Wheel,” involving 8 days of work with the horse in the painting. The title of this painting alludes to Mary Oliver’s poem To Begin With, the Sweet Grass. Inner growth and the stories we tell about our lives again and again come from stepping outside our comfort zone.
